A BRIEF HISTORY...
In the early 1970’s, Flora & Airto were pregnant with Diana while on the road with “Chick Corea’s Original Return To Forever”. Having been on the music scene since conception, Diana felt right at home with her parents in the dressing room of world renowned Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London and traveling the world.
It didn’t take long for Diana’s love of music to infect the hearts of those around her, including some of the greatest musicians of all time. The late and great Wayne Shorter even wrote and recorded a song for her called “Diana (Airto and Flora made her)” on his iconic album release, “Native Dancer”.
Flora and Airto recognized and nurtured Diana’s natural inclination towards art and music every way they could, which led to them including her, (and eventually Krishna as well), in numerous recordings, writing, and performing projects. After many years of supporting in a background capacity, Diana stepped into the roll of lead singer on Airto’s album project, “Aluê”.
Other great moments include sitting-in on stage at the Oakland Coliseum with the Grateful Dead at the age of 14, her live work with Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai, recording in a trio with Jazz vocalists Gregory Porter and Martin Luther on a tribute to Gil Scott Heron, Eydentity’s album release performance at SF Jazz, and being one of only two women ever (so far) invited to sing with Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the hall during Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Krishna had a similar upbringing to Diana and the two have known each other since they were five and three years old. His father is the late Jazz bassist Walter Booker, legendary Jazz saxophonist, the late Wayne Shorter is his uncle, and Jazz master Herbie Hancock is his Godfather. With all these incredible influences and exposure to music, Krishna soon began producing his own music with equipment given to him by Wayne, Herbie and guitar Motown legend Wah Wah Watson who headlined live in Brazil at Sesc Pinheiros Theater with Eyedentity.
Krishna’s love of Hip Hop fueled a creative fire in him to raise the level of musicality within the genre by fusing Jazz, Brazilian and World music elements with Hip Hop in a unique way. Herbie Hancock accredits Krishna in his biography "Possibilities" as being the one to have inspired his mega-hit, “Rock It”. Playing drums and trumpet in the school band, Krishna quickly realized he had the knack for “beatboxing” and rhyming, as well.
Soon he would be guesting on recordings for artists like Herbie Hancock and funky Jazz master, George Duke. Through working with Airto, Krishna learned to play percussion and further honed his production skills on much of Flora & Airto’s music, touring and recording with them for many years. From there, Sergio Mendes noticed his skills in Brazilian percussion and rapping and decided to hire him for his ground-breaking “Timeless” album tour.
